A large part of the sound recorded on a film set, whether be it in an independent or commercial film, use an overhead boom and shotgun mic. One advantage of using a shotgun mic is being able to maintain a good perspective on sound. When the camera goes in for a tight shot, the boom mic can move in as well; and on wide shots the boom can pull out with the camera, and still clearly pick up the dialogue.
To learn more about sound recording and mic positioning sign up for IFCO’s Advanced Sound Recording workshop.
Some of the topics to be discussed will be:
• Sound perspective;
• Mic positioning and booming techniques;
• Alternative mic setups;
• Using a field mixer;
• Introduction to wireless mics; and
• Tips and hints to getting a good recording.
